OTTAWA — Prime Minister Stephen Harper shuffled his Conservative cabinet Tuesday. Here are thumbnail sketches of the four ministers involved.
- Peter Kent, 67, is the MP for the Ontario riding of Thornhill. He was first elected to the House of Commons in 2008, after which he was appointed minister of state of foreign affairs (Americas), before becoming environment minister on Tuesday. Before getting into politics, Kent was a reporter and news anchor for Global News.
- Ted Menzies, 58, is the MP for the Alberta riding of Macleod. He was first elected in 2004, and became the parliamentary secretary to the minister of international co-operation in February 2006, then parliamentary secretary to the minister of finance in 2007. On Tuesday, he was sworn in as minister of state for finance. Before entering politics, Menzies worked in agriculture with growers and trade groups.
- Julian Fantino, 68, became an MP in the Ontario riding of Vaughan in a December 2010 byelection. Before that, he was commissioner of the Ontario Provincial Police. On Tuesday, he was appointed minister of state for seniors.
- Diane Ablonczy, 61, is the MP for Calgary-Nose Hill. She was first elected to the House in 1993. She has worn many hats — notably as the first female party whip, official critic for a number of departments and parliamentary secretary to the minister of finance. Before entering politics, Ablonczy was a farmer, lawyer and teacher. On Tuesday, she became a minister of state of foreign affairs.
