Cpl. Trevor Tribes received the Silver Star Rotary RCMP Volunteer of the Year Award for his work as auxiliary police coordinator. He oversees training and organization for the 17 auxiliary constables in the Vernon North Okanagan Detachment. He has done so since 1998 at a previous posting and in Vernon since 2002. “I’m not unlike the other RCMP member who all volunteer in the community in their areas of interest,” he said. “I make sure that these volunteers are able to carry out their duties in the community as volunteer auxiliary constables at community policing events, public events and ski patrol, foot patrol and bike patrol, as well as working with regular members to assist in carrying out their regular policing duties.” In 2010 Vernon North Okanagan Auxiliary constables donated more than 3,000 hours of time to their work. Some auxiliary constables go on to train and serve as members of the regular RCMP force. “I am pleased and honoured with the award but this is something you do because you want to, not to receive recognition. I was quite surprised by it,” said Tribes. The award was presented at Winter Breakout and Tribes chose to donate the $600 cash that goes with it to the kitchen renovations at the Upper Room Mission.
