Lumby residents will be going to the polls this spring to decide if the village pursues a prison. Village council unanimously decided Monday night to set Saturday April 30th as the date for a referendum. Councillor Janet Green said in moving the resolution "a lot of people don't have the confidence in a phone poll." Residents in rural Lumby, will also get a say, as Area D will partner with the village on the vote as confirmed by Area D NORD director Rick Fairbairn who was at the meeting. The decision came as more than 200 opponents of a prison, representing all ages, rallied outside the village office. Paul Fisher of the group "Lumby Concerned Citizens" addressed the crowd after telling council a prison would "destroy" the community's peaceful lifestyle. "If they've got any political savvy (council), they'll look at this and say, "Oh My God. I'd better stop and reconsider this a bit", because there's strong support for the No Lumby prison side." Fisher says there's more concerns about the facility with word it will hold 720 inmates. Fisher invited Mayor Kevin Acton to come out to address the crowd after the decision was made, but Acton declined as council still had the rest of its meeting to go through.
