Being late with his paperwork kept Jason Cox out of the running in the race to become the next Conservative candidate in the federal riding of Okanagan-Coquihalla. The Conservative party has revealed its final list of candidates for Tuesday‘s meetings to choose a successor to MP Stockwell Day, and Cox is not on it. Competing to succeed the retiring Day are Penticton city councillor Dan Albas, West Kelowna businessman Rudy Ensign and Penticton real estate agent Marshall Neufeld. Cox, owner of a consulting business and president of the Penticton and Wine Country Chamber of Commerce, expressed no bitterness over the party‘s decision against allowing him on the ballot. "The paperwork didn‘t arrive in Ottawa in time," he said Saturday. "It was such a tight timeline." "I thought I‘d made the deadline, but I didn‘t . . . so I‘m out," Cox said. Fred Delorey, the party‘s director of communications in Ottawa, confirmed that Cox was turned down because he was late filing. Delorey said the party follows strict timelines and procedures, all of which can be viewed on the party‘s website. "The process is short," Delorey said, acknowledging that Day announced his retirement only just over a week ago - on the evening of March 11 - and many were caught off guard. "It‘s shortened because Mr. (Liberal Leader Michael) Ignatieff is threatening an election and if that happens, we need to have a candidate in place." That election could be triggered over Tuesday‘s federal budget or a Liberal confidence motion on Friday.
