BROUSSARD, La. -- After cashing his first cheque of the season, Canadian golfer Chris Baryla gave half the money away. The native of Vernon B.C., jumped up the leaderboard at the Nationwide Tour's Chitimacha Louisiana Open by shooting a 4-under 67 on Sunday -- good news for more than just Baryla.
He donated US$1,000 plus half of his winnings at the event -- just shy of another $1,000 -- to the Canadian Red Cross in support of the relief efforts in Japan. "I believe it's important to use my position as a professional athlete to give back," Baryla said in a statement. "While we might be thousands of miles away, this terrible tragedy has affected us all and I encourage everyone to do what they can to support the people of Japan." The 28-year-old holds his PGA Tour card but has missed the cut in all six events he's entered this season.
