Federal Budget Holds Goodies For Locals Says MP - Colin Mayes expresses surprise NDP rejects budget
Okanagan-Shuswap MP Colin Mayes says there are lots of good things for local people in the federal budget introduced in the House of Commons Monday. He says the Tories have kept taxes low, offered to boost benefits for the poorest of low-income single seniors and give a new tax break to volunteer firefighters. ``We're leading the G-8 (countries) as far as the recovery and we've got a plan and it's working and I'm really quite surprised that they would want to try to challenge us now,'' says Mayes, referring to the decision by all the opposition parties not to support the budget. Prime Minister Harper held a last-ditch meeting with NDP Leader Jack Layton in order to win support but Layton has rejected the budget. ``I'm quite surprised that especially Mr. Layton wouldn't see some of the good things in the budget,'' says Mayes. ``We should keep a steady hand and keep on moving forward.'' Mayes adds that efforts by the opposition to cite the Conservative government for contempt may not go down well with voters. ``They run a risk of running an election on those issues at their peril,'' Mayes warns.

Blather and obfuscation, no specifics...We deserve better government
I absolutely love this. Let the voters decide whether they feel the issue of Harper's contempt for parliament, and by extension the people of Canada, is an issue of peril for those that are calling Harper on the issue?
Fabulous.
This bunch hits a new low every time they open their mouths. And despite this, will likely form the next government anyway.
Hopefully the issue of spending $26M in taxpayer ads to tout the Canada Action Plan, which was over before the ads ran, and the in-and-out scandal will resonate with voters just like the sponsorship scandal did.
Voters wake up and ask questions.
The real crime is $30 billion spent on fighter jets we don't need when hospital patients are sitting in closets, on bunk beds and in Tim Hortons.
Anything in the budget for health care, Canadian's #1 priority? Zippo.
Bush showed us that the 'spend and cut' doesn't really work? Harper is copying it by cutting corporate taxes yet spending on prisons and jets. At best irresponsible, at worst incompetent.
