Doctors Make Case To CouncilAttention: open in a new window.

VJH TowerCode purples have lost their impact at Vernon Jubilee Hospital. So says Dr Chris Cunningham who made a presentation on behalf of physicians to city council, calling for the completion of the two shelled-in floors on the new towers.  Cunningham told the elected reps,  they've done everything they can to reduce the overcrowding.  "All our physicians, nurses, managers, administration, IHA, have worked hard to improve inefficiencies, and try to get what we can out of the resources we have. We've done that and yet, we're not in the same position, we're in a worse position."  Cunningham told the media, the hospital has constant code purples, which recognizes over capacity issues.  "If you have code purple every week or so, and then every day, then code purple constantly, then the meaning of code purple becomes less meaningful, doesn't it?  Cunningham asked council for any kind of support to lobby the province for bed funding. "If at the end of the day there's 30 more acute care beds open tomorrow, and down the road 30 more, then that is a positive direction, but to not complete the two floors, that is a mistake, a big mistake." BC Health Minister Mike de Jong said during his visit to Vernon last week, it would cost about 20 million to equip the two new floors and up to 15 million a year to staff them, funding the province is looking into but making no guarantees.
