The Vernon School District has approved its new budget which includes 1.7 million dollars in spending cuts. The plan reflects a projected enrolment decline of 173 students this fall, plus higher utility and employee benefit costs. Chairman Bill Turanski says the cuts include eight full time teaching positions, one clerical support staff and a half time position in administration. Those staff reductions will save $575,000. There will also be an across the board cut of five percent in supply budgets (savings of $200,000), and special education will lose 334-thousand dollars due to fewer students. The allocation for emergent teacher staffing requirements will be reduced by $90,000. Turanski says balancing the budget this year has been the most difficult in recent years but they still managed to avoid school closures and students fees for transportation. He says trustees are supporting a call for a review of the funding system for the district.DON QUIXOTE VS. CITY HALL When an American gets mad, he says "where's my Gun". When a Canadian gets pissed off he says "Where is my pen, I'm going to send a letter to the EDITOR". When the EDITOR won't publish his letter he sets up his own BLOG page. When I received enough support to get a Council Seat the dogma of the establishment became : "Better to have him inside the tent pissing out, than outside pissing in." (Only time will tell !)
