The Vernon School District has approved its new budget which includes 1.7 million dollars in spending cuts. The plan reflects a projected enrolment decline of 173 students this fall, plus higher utility and employee benefit costs. Chairman Bill Turanski says the cuts include eight full time teaching positions, one clerical support staff and a half time position in administration. Those staff reductions will save $575,000. There will also be an across the board cut of five percent in supply budgets (savings of $200,000), and special education will lose 334-thousand dollars due to fewer students. The allocation for emergent teacher staffing requirements will be reduced by $90,000. Turanski says balancing the budget this year has been the most difficult in recent years but they still managed to avoid school closures and students fees for transportation. He says trustees are supporting a call for a review of the funding system for the district.
