Doris Janssen, CHBC News:
An Okanagan resident was tricked out of thousands of dollars this weekend after attempting to buy into Stanley Cup fever. Kelowna RCMP say a Lake Country resident paid $3,200 Sunday for four non-existent Stanley Cup final tickets purchased from a dealer on a Toronto internet classified site.
The money was bank transferred after several emails between the thief and the victim. Since the transaction, the suspect has not been reachable. RCMP are warning consumers who use the internet classifieds to be very careful of such offers as they happen often, with victims losing thousands of dollars each time. Police say when buying over the internet, stick with reputable retailers and ask lots of questions. And if possible, police say use Pay Pal to facilitate the purchase to insure against loss.
