Slow lumber markets are taking a toll at several plywood and saw mills in the Okanagan and Kamloops areas. Tolko Industries says its Lumby, Armstrong and Heffley Creek (near Kamloops) operations will be shutdown for several weeks this summer. The curtailments are set for weeks of July 4th and 11th, with a possible restart on the 18th. The company says an extension of the closures may be considered if markets don't pick up. Closures of the three plants will affect a total of 260 Tolko employees and cut the company's plywood production by 10-million board feet. Larry Broadfoot, GM of lumber and plywood sales says, "With Canada being the main market for our plywood products, this sector has been particularly impacted by the unusually cold, wet spring, and the related low construction activity."
