CHETWYND – It’s going to be a long trip, but Cst. Chris Spiers of the Chetwynd RCMP is hopping aboard the Cops for Cancer, Tour de North.  About 15 riders will be heading out from Fort St. John Sept. 9. They will be riding about 100 km a day, and finish in Williams Lake Sept. 15.  They are scheduled to be in Chetwynd Sept. 11.  In addition to a lot of bicycle training – approximately 100 km per week – Spiers is also fundraising as each participant is expected to raise a minimum of $2,500.  Spiers is kicking off his fundraising efforts at the Cops for Cancer Jail and Bail and Barbecue Sunday at the Chetwynd International Chainsaw Carving Competition grounds adjacent to the Chetwynd and District Recreation Centre.  “The Jail and Bail will be a fun event in which multiple members of the community will be “arrested” and put into “jail” onsite,” Spiers said. “The “prisoners” will then attempt to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society to post their bail.”  All proceeds will be going to the Canadian Cancer Society and funds raised through Cops for Cancer are focused on childhood cancers.  Every kilometre they ride, every community that welcomes the tour, every dollar donated helps children fighting cancer.  Every fall more than a hundred members of law enforcement and emergency services cycle up to two weeks across four areas of British Columbia to support children with cancer and their families.  Donations to Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock, Tour de North, Tour de Valley and Tour de Coast are invested in lifesaving childhood cancer research and caring support services including the acclaimed summer recreation program, Camp Goodtimes.  Donations to Spiers ride may be made at the Chetwynd RCMP Detachment. For information, call Spiers at 250-788-922.  (Online Donations Page)
