Another scam alert

Vernon/North Okanagan 2011-07-15 08:17 PDT RCMP

It seems that every month, RCMP detachments are putting out an alert advising the public about a scam that is going around the area. This week we have been advised of another one making the rounds. The latest comes under the logo of Global Test Market. They send a letter to a potential participant with the instructions that the Hudson’s Bay and Global Test Market have been engaged by Western Union to check performance levels at numerous locations.  The scammer sends a cheque for $974.00. The potential victim is instructed to cash the cheque, keeping a portion for themselves and wiring back $813.00 through Western Union. What participants have learned in the past is if their banks accept the cheque and they send the money to the scammer, victims quickly learn the cheque is fake and they would be out the cash wired out or spent. Simply put you will send your good hard earned money to the people at the other end and you will be out of pocket that amount. Contact with the Bay’s Fraud Department have confirmed that they are not involved in, and do not conduct these kinds of surveys. The RCMP wants to advise everyone to always be careful and alert to all types of scams. Always do your research. One place to look is the Better Business Bureau web site under top ten scams. This type of scam is listed in the #7 category along with the grandparent scam among others. Be careful and remember if it looks too good to be true...it likely is.
