About 200 people gathered on the steps of the tower in hopes of increasing pressure on the provincial government to better staff the facility. While 60 new beds will be added to the tower, the province has yet to commit to the $30 million it would take to staff them. Rally organizer Peter Hill says staffing the two floors would better help doctors and nurses to do their jobs. Vernon-Monashee MLA Eric Foster says, while residents are demanding action now, it is more a matter of ‘when’ and not ‘if’. The new tower is scheduled to open in September.

200 Attend VJH Rally Written by Peter McIntyre Saturday, 02 July 2011 02:52
A public rally on Canada Day calling for more bed funding at Vernon Jubilee Hospital, attracted about 200 people. They gathered on the steps to the new Polson Tower where a picture was taken that will be sent to Premier Christy Clark and other provincial government reps. Organizer Peter Hill says they will request the government fill in the two shelled-in floors to reduce ongoing over-crowding at the hospital. Vernon Monashee MLA Eric Foster was among the people on hand for the rally. He told the crowd he's doing his very best to get the funding. "Every day I'm talking with health ministry officials to make them aware of the situation. This will help a great deal." It would cost about 30 million dollars to equip and staff the two new floors with 60 beds. The new tower opens to the public in late September.
