It will likely cost you more to take a bus in the Central Okanagan next year.
City Councillors will review a report Monday which recommends a fare increase of 25 cents for both conventional and custom transit along with an increase of about 12 per cent for monthly passes. The cost of a Universal Bus Pass (UPASS) used by UBCO students would rise from $50 per semester to $60. The fee hike would take affect January 1, 2012. The last fare increase for Kelowna Regional Transit riders occurred in 2007. Adult and college student fares would rise to $2.25 while seniors and students up to grade 12 would see their fares jump to $2. Monthly passes would increase to $60 (adults), $42 (seniors), $48 (college students) and $38 (students). HandyDART users would see fares rise to $2.25 while monthly passes would increase to $67. The report indicates the cost recovery for conventional transit for 2011/2012 is 26 per cent. Earlier recoveries have been closer to 30 per cent. "This has been the target goal and when the recovery level is reduced below that minimum level, a fare increase or expenditure reduction should be considered," says Financial Services Director, Keith Grayston.

Wow a whole quarter ($.25) increase while the users spend $3.00 to $5.00 for a cup of coffee.
