Last Day For Bids On Goose Lake Water Project - Duteau Creek water quality advisory still rated as ``fair''

It has been a frustrating summer for water customers on the Duteau Creek source who remain on a water quality advisory. Greater Vernon Water manager Al Cotsworth admits the multi-million-dollar Duteau Creek water treatment plant has had trouble keeping up with demand during this high flow period. He says other sources, not up to certain Interior Health standards, have been brought online. This includes Goose Lake. ``During the high flow periods right now when it's hot, Duteau Creek water treatment plant does have problems keeping up and it also means we have to put Goose Lake online,'' says Cotsworth. Thursday is the last day for engineering firms to submit design proposals for a project that will see Goose Lake used, in future, for agricultural purposes only. ``We're probably looking at late fall for some of the start of construction but it will be a couple of years (to complete),'' stresses Cotsworth. ``It's a six-million dollar project.'' The work is expected to lessen the chances of water quality advisories. Cotsworth says NORD's board of directors will choose which firm gets the contract. He expects work to start in the fall and warns there will be traffic disruption along Old Kamloops Road. Despite the water quality advisory still in effect for Duteau customers, there is no shortage of water. Al Cotsworth tells us the reservoirs remain at one of the highest levels seen in many years.

Another example of poor management by the politicians. This expensive project should not proceed until it has been agreed that separation costs should be charged to the jurisdiction that the project is in . Also, devolution must be finalized before this project proceeds.
