MacKay confirms 'royal' renaming of military

Defence Minister Peter MacKay has confirmed a royal name change for Canada's navy and air force Tuesday, in a move that taps Canada's military heritage.  The army, formally known as the Land Force Command, will also be renamed the Canadian Army. The Maritime Command and Air Command will again be known as the Royal Canadian Navy and Royal Canadian Air Force — names that haven't been used in more than three decades.  MacKay announced the name change at an event in Halifax while other Conservative MPs are hosting simultaneous events marking the transition in other parts of the country. According to a Canadian Forces document obtained by CBC News on Monday, the move restores the historic names of the three branches of the Forces, and the initiative is being billed as "an important and recognizable part of Canada's military heritage."(more)
