Downtown Clock To Start Ticking Before Christmas, Promises City Staff - Council okays 15-thousand for high tech heart in old-fashioned clock

We should be able to set out watches to it before Christmas. That's the promise of City staff now that Vernon council has approved 15-thousand dollars be used on GPS technology to get the clock, across from the post office, running again. Councillor Patrick Nicol is satisfied. ``That was alot better than the other version,'' says Nicol. ``That could have climbed to 50, 60-thousand (dollars) quite easily.'' The more expensive option would have entailed fixing and installing the original 1912 mechanism. It's now going into the museum. Councillor Shawn Lee, who had mixed feelings about it, told council there was also a safety issue involved. The wrought iron device is very heavy and it's presumed the clock tower might not have dealt well with the weight.
