Water Rate Debate

Written by Peter McIntyre Thursday, 22 September 2011 18:05
When it comes to water rates, Greater Vernon has the 15th highest among 23 billing areas in the Thompson Okanagan.  A new report shows the average home pays 572 dollars a year for water, less than the survey's high of 834 dollars in Naramata.  The lowest of the 23 was Rutland Waterworks at $220 a year.  The information was gathered comparing a single family residence with an annual consumption of 350 cubic meters (76,989 Imperial gallons) with a lot size less than a quarter of an acre. After a special meeting Thursday to discuss various items, Greater Vernon Advisory Committee chairman Wayne Lippert says most directors feel water is priced right. "Coldstream director Gyula Kiss, he wanted lower rates, but overall everyone else seems to be satisfied because they realize water has got a cost." Meantime, another report from RDNO Engineering shows the average residence in Greater Vernon uses 662 litres of water each day.  That works out to 901 litres a day in the summer, and 485 in the winter.

Don Quixote Note: Actually Greater Vernon is the 17th highest not the 15th highest.
