It should be known within a matter of days, perhaps a week, whether the Agricultural Land Commis

sion
will allow Okanagan College land in Greater Vernon to be used for a big
outdoor sports facility. That's the word from College spokesperson
Allan Coyle following a hearing Tuesday before the ALC. ``Both the
Commission and ourselves felt the opportunity to discuss the proposal in
greater depth was a positive thing,'' said Coyle, following the
hearing. The delegation, led by Vernon Dean Jane Lister, also included
Coldstream Mayor Jim Garlick, NORD chair Herman Halvorsen and Vernon
councillor Patrick Nicol. ``We were better prepared,'' said Garlick,
referring to an earlier submission to remove the ten acres of College
land from the Agriculture Land Reserve for the sports site. That was
rejected by the ALC. Garlick said that this time ``the idea of community
need, what the proposal did to benefit the community and the benefits
to agriculture'' were presented. Nicol told the ALC of broad community
support for the proposal from local governments, sporting associations,
School District 22 and the health authority. However none was able to
read how the Commission would rule. ``There's a decision to be made and I
think both parties listened carefully,'' said Nicol. ``No one really
knows,'' he added, refusing to speculate.
