RCMP officials will be in Vernon Saturday to present a special award to a Vernon student.
18 year old Kevin Minguy is the first recipient of a scholarship from the Peace Officers' Memorial Ribbon Society.
Society founder and president Shawn Coady says it honours the memory of fallen officers like Kevin's dad, Jean Minguy, a Vernon constable who died in June 2005 after falling off a police boat into Okanagan Lake. Coady says, "When an officer dies, it's our moral obligation, or our responsibility, that his dreams of educating his children are fulfilled, and that's what the goal was." Coady says Kevin's tuition and books will be fully covered. "We partnered with the University of Calgary, and with the university on board and us, we are giving him the scholarship to go there for the next four years."Jean Minguy was a 23 year veteran of the RCMP when he died.
