Park land acquired

There’s a  new chunk of park land in Greater Vernon.  The Regional District of North Okanagan has spent $875,000 for 0.85 acres on Kalavista Drive, next to the lagoon and the boat launch.  “You’ll never get it again,” said director Patrick Nicol of the opportunity that arose to purchase the property. “It will be there for the public for the rest of time.” The site is commonly referred to as the log house property because of the structure that sits there.  “It’s beneficial to have greenspace in that area,” said director Jim Garlick of its proximity to the boat launch, tennis courts and Kal Beach.  The park could also be used to enhance the environment of the lagoon.  “It gives us the ability to deal with problems that arise,” said Garlick.  Director Gyula Kiss fully supports the land acquisition, saying it could be used by people wanting to kayak or canoe.  “If not purchased, it could be used for something else and it would not fit into the character of the area,” he said of possible development. At this point, there are no immediate plans for public use.  “I have heard suggestions of a picnic area but there will be nothing intense there,” said Nicol.  A consultation process will be part of long-term planning. “Staff will meet with residents and look at the options,” said Nicol.  Kiss has already ruled out one possible activity. “I don’t want it to be used to expand the boat launch,” he said. The future of the cabin is unknown and the integrity of the structure will be investigated by the regional district. “There are existing groups using the cabin and we will want to touch base with them,” said Keith Pinkoski, parks planner, of the consultation process with the community.
