Sports Facility Could Boost College Programs

The proposed sports complex in Coldstream would open the door to new programs at Okanagan College, if it gets the green light.  The facility would include a running track and lighted playing field on ten acres next to the college.  Regional Dean Jane Lister says it could also lead to new programs at the campus.  "A human kinetics program is one that has been talked about, but other athletic sports related programs would have to be researched and examined to see if it would be suitable." Lister says it would also provide recreational opportunities for students, and she says the student association is supporting the proposal.  It will next be discussed by local politicians to determine if and when a referendum will be held.  As part of the approval to use the ten acres for a sports complex, the institution is being encouraged by the Agricultural Land Commission to develop more agricultural content. Lister says a demonstration garden is being created on 1.5 acres below the parking lot.  "We're hoping that various activities will take place on that with respect to agriculture, like agricultural research and practicum opportunities for our environmental studies students." Lister says the garden should be ready for use next spring or summer, allowing some continuing studies classes to be held on the site.
