Decision Made on Vernon Rec Centre Written

Vernon Rec Centre
Local decision makers have decided to repair the Vernon Rec Centre, rather than build a new one.  Greater Vernon Advisory Committee director Rob Sawatzky says a brand new facility in the same location would cost 18 million, likely not a bill taxpayers would support. "I don't think it's an option, and the other problem that you would have is could you ever get it that close to a stream anymore?" 1.7 million dollars in repairs will be made to the 46 year old building, specifically to get rid of rot in the pool walls and roof, and to fix the heating and air lines in the auditorium. A pool dehumidification system costing $600,000 will also be added.  The money will come from RDNO reserves.  Sawatzky says they will look into legal action as the problems were caused by improper installations years ago. "But apparently the people who signed off as engineers don't exist, so were not hopeful of getting any remuneration." A staff report by community development coordinator Tannis Nelson says the centre was built in 1967, and the aquatics centre was renovated in 1994. "Although it is an older facility, it is a sound building, and with the recommended repairs, will last at least 40 years with some annual commitments to upgrades and maintenance."
