Homes around the Vernon Creek area are about to be protected from the threat of a potential flood. The federal and provincial governments are providing $640,000 that
will go towards the Vernon Creek Drainage Basin project, the first of
four phases of storm water control and wetland enhancements. Manager of Engineering, Rob Dickinson says the City of Vernon will
kick in the rest of the money to complete the project, $320,000. He
says $270,000 is from DCC's and the other $50,000 is in the budget from
last year, which he says just needs to go before council for their
approval. Dickinson says they've been planning the project for three years. He says it's intended to reduce flooding during a 100 year storm,
which would raise the creek level by 4 metres and swell to a 325 meter
width.
