A group of local residents is calling for Vernon council to put a moratorium on installing smart meters in the city. Mike Pearson from 'Citizens for Safe Technology' has a long list of
concerns including radiation emitted by the wireless devices. "The biggest thing is the health concerns, and some other people
think it's the security because a hacker can find out when you leave the
house or when you're at home." He says there's also concerns the costs will go up. Pearson was accompanied by about 30 members of his group at City Hall Monday. Council will discuss the request at its next meeting. Councillor Patrick Nicol was asked if he would support a moratorium on the devices. "Well, 32 communities have (passed a moratorium), and I haven't looked into it extensively enough to know how effective it is, or how it
actually works, but there are some questions that are being raised, and
I would like to hear the other side from BC Hydro, quite frankly." BC Hydro says on its website the meters are safe, as confirmed by the Provincial Health Officer and Health Canada. The company has already installed about 800-thousand of them around BC, about halfway towards its installation plan.
