Local MLA clarifies pay status

Vernon-Monashee MLA Eric Foster wants to clarify how much he is paid. Foster is concerned the media and the public have been led to believe that MLAs receive an annual raise based on the cost of living. “I am looking at my pay stub from 2009 and from 2012 and they are exactly the same,” he said. Salary information from the B.C. Teachers Federation was published in the March 2 Morning Star. In 2006 or 2007, adjustments were made to MLAs’ compensation to reflect the cost of living. However, Foster says those adjustments were ultimately put on hold because of the recession. “The 2012 budget calls for it to be frozen for two more years,” he said. “If we hadn’t done that, we would deserve to be spread across the papers. If others aren’t getting a raise, we shouldn’t get a raise.” Foster and other MLAs receive $102,000 a year for their efforts. There is additional money for cabinet ministers. “We get compensated very well and I don’t expect to get a raise, especially in difficult times,” said Foster.
