The bugs have been worked out of the new computer assisted dispatch at Vernon Fire Rescue. Emergency Program Coordinator, Brent Watson says it's the most significant upgrade in the 100 year history of the department. Watson unveiled their new half-million-dollar communication system to politicians and the media Tuesday. He says it is built with future operations in mind, so they could handle regional dispatch or even contract out their services. Watson says they inherited antiquated equipment from the Regional District and have now skipped a generation with this upgrade. He says they looked at Vancouver and scaled it back for a city the size of Vernon. Mayor Rob Sawatzky agrees with Watson that you can't beat local knowledge - with some first hand experience from his time as a doctor and some very frustrating times when ambulances were dispatched by remote services, which he says was, "bad, bad, bad." He says you can't put a price on public safety and the 540-thousand dollars is money well spent. Phase two of the computer assisted dispatch is in this year's budget with screens going in three fire trucks for immediate communication.
