New coins cause problems for TransLink machines

CBC News Posted: May 3, 2012 1:36 PM PT
B.C.'s transportation authority says it hopes to have a solution by next week for a commuter headache caused by newly minted coins. TransLink's ticket vending machines are not accepting new one-dollar and two-dollar coins issued by the Royal Canadian Mint because they are too lightweight. Businesses across Canada that use coin-operated devices have been complaining about the new loonies and toonies.
Ticket machines at SkyTrain stations will be getting a computer upgrade, says TransLink spokesperson Drew Snider. "The plan is to get everything working on the Canada Line and at least one ticket vending machine per station on the Expo/Millennium Line working." Snider says it's unclear how much the fixes will cost and who is going to pay for it. Customers have alternatives to using a new coin in the vending machines, including using debit/credit cards, purchasing FareSaver tickets and swapping a new coin for an old one.
