Unionized employees of the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) have voted to go on strike. In a press release from the RDOS, the district claims it has treated
their employees fairly over the term of the past two Collective
Agreements. Figures released by RDOS Directors show the union is asking for a raise of 6.2% in 2012 and 3.18% in 2013. Meanwhile, the district says it gave them a raise of 4.25% in 2006,
followed by two jumps of 3.5%, then an increase of 2.5% in 2009,
followed by hikes of 1.5% the last two years. The Regional District would also like to clarify a statement made by
their employees that the Board of the Regional District gave themselves a
raise. They say the board has received no increased compensation since
2006. A provincial mediator has been assigned to help resolve the differences between the two sides. In a final statement, signed by Board Chair Dan Ashton, the release
says "The Board of the Regional District believes the RDOS has
outstanding employees and we appreciate their dedication, but we're
disappointed that they believe a 6.2% increase in 2012 is something the
citizens of the RDOS would support. We hope an agreement can be reached
amicably and that we can continue working together to provide excellent
service to our citizens."
