City Gets Ironman Input

Written by Peter McIntyre 107.5 KISSFM  Monday, 17 September 2012 20:08
Vernon city staff are putting in an Ironman-like effort to put together a proposed bid for Ironman Canada. City council will decide Friday in a special meeting if the they will make a bid to host the event for five years. Economic development manager Kevin Poole says they've been compiling information, and getting input from the public. "We haven't gone through and categorized them at this point as far as all the emails that have come in. I would suggest the ones we've sifted through, for the most part, people are in favour, but we'll take a look and bring that back to council." Poole says they've received about 100 comments from the public at ironman@vernon.ca "Probably the bigger one (input gathering) is the athletes who live in Vernon. They have also reached out to the public and they're getting flooded, so I would suggest they're getting much more than we are." Poole says it's a tight timeline to get the information together for this Friday, with proposals having to be submitted to the World Triathlon  Corp by Monday. "The WTO also has a tight timeline to put everything together on their end. They want to put on an event in less than a year."

If the assumed race entry fee is $700 and 2500 entrants are expected, then the race owner will gross $1,750,000.

If that is case, then why would any city put up money to cover police, city expenses or other related costs just for the prestige of holding this race?
