Vernon Fire Rescue has outlined its contingency plan should Okanagan Landing volunteers withdraw their services. A majority of the 28 Landing members have said they will retire rather than merge with the Vernon volunteers, upset over a new operations structure which they were not consulted on.
Mayor Rob Sawatzky hopes the Landing firefighters will honour their contract that runs until the end of January, but if not, they have a plan. "To be quite frank, every municipality in today's world has to have those plans in place because every municipality has difficulty attracting people from the community to be part of a volunteer fire department." A Vernon Fire Rescue report says there will be no disruption in the municipal fire service, and both career and paid-per-call firefighters will be responding from the downtown and Landing stations. " "Further, resources can be "moved up" and staged in alternate locations as needed," says the report.
