The
committee working to bring Ironman to Vernon just got a big boost.
Coldstream Council has scheduled a special meeting for Monday to vote on
support for a bid to bring Ironman to Vernon. The recommendation is
that the District would assist with costs for any portion of the
competition within Coldstream. Eric Jewell, with the committee, says the international exposure that
comes with an event of this magnitude will help put Vernon on the map.
He says there are many other benefits that could lead to improvements to
park and beach facilities, infrastructure and possibly even roads. They've set up a site and are looking for people who support the idea to register http://www.bcracereview.com/bring-ironman-to-vernon.html or find them on facebook at Bring Ironman to Vernon. Vernon City Council has instructed the committee to see what kind of
support the community has for an event like this and they think that
Vernon will open their arms to this. The bid needs to be submitted to the WTC by September 24 which does
not leave a lot of time. The winning bid will be announced during the
Ironman World Championships in Kona Hawaii during the first week of
October, 2012.
