Lumby's proposing a substantial hike in development fees. Mayor Kevin Acton says the bylaw hasn't been updated in 30 years and an earlier council knocked the fees back, trying to encourage development. He says "If they're unrealistically low, then somebody's paying for it and that would be the taxpayer, so we need to shift that back onto the developer I believe." The fees are used to cover things like water and sewer installations . Acton says they will have full public input before changing the bylaw and are also looking at other ways of encouraging development.
