It's expected that Penticton Mayor Dan Ashton will throw his hat in the ring to be the B.C. Liberal candidate for the Penticton riding in the next provincial election. Ashton had indicated an interest in the position, but has yet to publicly declare his intentions. However, sources close to the Penticton Herald said that Ashton, who also serves as chair of the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen, has been drumming up support in the past several weeks while several supporters are selling party memberships on his behalf. A formal announcement by Ashton is anticipated for this week. The Liberals are seeking a new candidate following the announcement on Aug. 19 that Bill Barisoff will not seek re-election in the next election scheduled for the spring of 2013. Candidates to declare their interest thus far have been former school board chair Connie Denesiuk and Summerland businessman Mark Ziebarth. A potential fourth candidate, Summerland Mayor Janice Perrino, is also believed to be interested in the position. Meanwhile, the NDP will have a contest for its candidate as Meadowlark Festival co-founder Dick Cannings and former Summerland councillor David Finnis have both declared they will seek the nomination. The Green party and Conservatives do not have candidates in the Penticton riding at this time.
