Residents Get Road Upgrade From City

Civil disobedience has paid-off for a group of frustrated Vernon citizens. Residents in the 8700 and 8800 blocks of Okanagan Landing Road made up their own traffic signs and spray painted a crosswalk on the road, to slow down vehicles. They have sought changes from City Hall for 2 years, and now the city has agreed to add traffic calming measures in their neighborhood. Resident Barry McDougall says it's what they wanted. "We're all concerned about our kids. We had a lot of representation here today and we're pretty happy about that." McDougall says they're pleased the city listened. "And the fact that they're doing a pilot project in our section is wonderful, and that they're going to extend it (between Paddlewheel Park and Ellison Park) is tremendous, so we're pleased." Councillor Mary Jo O'Keefe says the residents' civil disobedience motivated the city to take action. The home made traffic signs will have to come down. City engineering services manager Rob Dickenson says that's considered graffiti, and only the province and local governments are allowed to put those up. He says ICBC could sue the person responsible if there was an accident.
