No Longer  A Team
George AbbottThe president of the Shuswap Liberals admits it will be a tough fight for his party to hang onto the riding with the departure of George Abbott. The four term MLA has announced he won't run again next May. Brian Cowan of the Liberals says they don't have any candidates in mind at this point. He told The Kamloops Daily News, it's a swing riding that's stayed Liberal since 1996 due to Abbott's popularity and middle of the road politics, even drawing some NDP and Green party votes. "The reason George wins the way he did is one side of the NDP has supported him in past, so did Greens. It's been across the spectrum," said Cowan. Steve Gunner from Armstrong is the NDP candidate in Shuswap, and he told The Morning Star there's an appetite for change in the riding. The riding was last won by a New Democrat in 1991, Shannon O' Neill. Abbott turned the riding Liberal in 1996 defeating Calvin White of the NDP (35% to 31%). Abbott crushed the NDP's Wayne Fowler in 2001, 56% to 16%. His third term was over Calvin White 46% to 35% in 2005, and in 2009, he beat out Steve Gunner of the NDP 46% to 30%.
