Vernon Tory Leader Supports Cummins

The leader of the B-C Conservative Party is putting on a brave face ahead of a weekend convention in Langley. John Cummins could be forced to step down if party members vote in favour of a leadership review. He says dissent within the party doesn't bother him and everyone is free to speak out. ''In an open and free democratic society you have to expect that, so I'm not particularly concerned about that. We'll just see how it all plays out, but its not a pressing concern of mine right now." The party's Vernon constituency president, Ian Tribes, says he stands by Cummins as leader, calling him a great speaker and communicator. "John always tells you what he truly believes – a rare trait in politics – and, most importantly, is a true philosophical conservative," says Tribes. Tribes says a very small group of party members are pushing for the review. "Quite frankly, I can see no logic or sense to their actions.  But, they are free to speak their minds, and to press their case.  I just don't think they'll get very far." The 70 year old Cummins, a former Reform, Alliance and Conservative M-P from Delta, has been the party's leader since May 2011.
