Vernon Will Bid For Ironman Canada

About 40 people were at City Hall Friday for council's announcement to bid for Ironman Canada (P McIntyre photo)Vernon will be making a bid to become the new host of the Ironman Canada event for the next five years. City council made that decision after a nearly two hour long in-camera meeting today, held behind closed doors due to the financial aspects of the bid. About 40 people, including members of the athletic community in support of the bid, were on hand for the announcement at City Hall. The city's bid will have a set budget for its costs, but that amount is being kept secret during the bidding process. Councillor Juliette Cunningham says it wasn't an easy decision for her, especially given the short timeline and the unknown costs. She says, "But I think having gone through an in- depth discussion today, I have a comfort level with the maximum budget that we've allowed for the bid." Councillor Brian Quiring has been one of the biggest supporters of the idea. He tells Kiss FM, "A lot of us ran on economic development. This is a great opportunity to step forward and do that. This is great for the community." Councillor Bob Spiers has had questions about the costs, and he was asked if those questions have been answered. "Council supported the bid going forward. Anything I say will indicate how I voted and apparently I'm not allowed to do that anymore." The outcome of the in-camera vote was not released, but there's indications it was not unanimous. Kim Flick, manager of community development, says the the city received 722 responses in support and 44 not in support, and over 550 individual or families indicated they were willing to volunteer. 33 businesses indicated interest in sponsorship, and there was support from numerous community groups and all the neighboring cities and jurisdictions including Lake Country, Armstrong, Salmon Arm, Coldstream, Lumby, RDNO, Spallumcheen, Enderby, the Okanagan Indian Band and MLA Eric Foster. Vernon will join Kelowna, Kamloops and Victoria as BC cities known to also be making a bid. Communities have until Monday to submit proposals. The World Triathlon Corporation will announce the winning city October 10th.

If Council held an In Camera meeting and not prepared release the minutes or the vote, why then did Kim Flick release the following:
