Sports facilityGreater Vernon could be making a bid to host the BC Senior Games in 2016, but only if a new sports venue gets the go ahead. Greater Vernon Advisory  Committee directors are recommending the regional board support a bid, as long as there's support from community groups, and if the new 7.5 million dollar track and field facility next to Okanagan College is approved in the April 6 referendum. The event would bring up to 4,000 participants in 29 sports to the area for four days in the late summer. All the entrants are 55 and older. The economic spin-off from the 2009 event in Richmond was two million dollars. The BC Seniors Games Society assists the host community and volunteers with event management services through an agreement with the BC Games Society, and provides $85,000 from the BC government, plus a portion of the participant registration fees.
