Drivers wanting to avoid Vernon's higher parking fees, will soon have another option on weekends.
City council has approved the use of the former Bennett parking lot on 29th Avenue for free parking Saturdays, same as the Parkade and Coldstream Hotel lot. Councillor Brian Quiring says he's heard a lot of complaints about the higher parking rates, but he stands by council's decision. "This was a tough budget. We were challenged. Things are going up but parking is still relatively cost effective in Vernon and I think we did the right thing." The city will spend $1,000 to improve signage promoting the free parking at the Bennett lot, and council will review how the free parking has gone in the early fall. Rates at parking meters doubled this month, from 50 cents an hour, to $1.
