Regional Crime Profiles The following profiles are based on the 2011 Crime Statistics and include police resourcing data.

In the North Okanagan Regional District (NORD), the RCMP provides municipal police services to
the City of Vernon and the District of Coldstream. The RCMP Provincial Force polices
municipalities under 5,000 as well as unincorporated or rural areas. In the NORD, the provincial
areas include the communities of Armstrong, Enderby, Falkland, Lumby, and Spallumcheen.*

In 2011, there were 94 RCMP members assigned to police the region: 63 members policed the City
of Vernon and the District of Coldstream, while 31 were responsible for policing the regional
district’s provincial areas.

In 2011, the population for the NORD was 85,042, stable from the 2010 population of 85,034.

Police in BC record criminal activity using Statistics Canada’s Uniform Crime Reporting 2 (UCR2)
Survey. Criminal Code offences are used to calculate police case loads and crime rates. Total
Criminal Code offences include violent, property, and other crimes.

In 2011, 5,892 Criminal Code offences were recorded within the Regional District. This was
approximately an 8% decrease from the 6,380 recorded in 2010.

In 2011, the NORD recorded a crime rate of 69 offences per 1,000 population, a decrease of 8%
from the 2010 crime rate of 75.

A case load of 63 Criminal Code offences per RCMP member was recorded for the NORD in 2011.
This was almost 2% higher than the case load of 62 recorded in 2010.
*NOTE – According to the 2011 Canada Census results released February 8, 2012, the Township of
Spallumcheen went over 5,000 population and, as a result, the Township became responsible for
providing policing within its municipal boundaries effective April 1, 2012. Spallumcheen signed a
Municipal Police Unit Agreement with the provincial government for the provision of RCMP municipal
services. This change in policing will be reflected in the 2012 profile. For this 2011 Regional Profile,
Spallumcheen is included in the area policed by Armstrong Prov.
