Addictions centreA new addictions facility in Vernon took a bit longer to get open due to neighborhood resistance, but it's now up and running. The house on 43rd Avenue run by the John Howard Society has ten beds for men 19 and older, and sober living apartments. It's called Bill's Place, after Howard House founder and long tie John Howard Society executive director BillHesketh who passed away in 2010. His son Dave says family members are very honoured. "Dad's legacy is helping, and so many will benefit from this. There are no bad eggs, there's just bad situations, and this gives them a chance to get out of that and become a good egg." Barb Levesque, executive director from the John Howard Society paid tribute to Hesketh in the opening ceremony. "I think about him often, and think about what he would do and how he would respond with that super generosity of spirit he had." Levesque says they've been accepting clients since last month, and she hopes the facility can blend into the neighborhood. "I know there's still people with concerns and questions, and we want to let them know we're still there to answer those questions and be a good neighbor." Levesque says they began accepting residents at the end of March or early April.
