Vernon's mayor says Saturday's sports facility referendum was a little too close for comfort. The vote for the track and field facility next to Okanagan College passed by a 52% margin, which was a bit of a surprise to Rob Sawatzky. "In a perfect world, I would like to see a slightly stronger endorsement or rejection but that's the reality and it's good the public has voted to do something positive," Sawatzky said to Kiss FM. Sawatzky says the facility --which should be done by the fall of 2014 -- will make the area more attractive, and a better place to live. The mayor was somewhat surprised at the 18% turnout in Greater Vernon, 8,220 voters, despite it being a high profile issue. "Yes, given the weather was good, and the time of year, but I'm not sure what it says. Perhaps a majority of people thought it was positive, and didn't bother to come out."
