Site for track and field facility next to Okanagan College |
The next step for the planned sports facility next to Okanagan College in Coldstream will be an archaeological study. It will cost up to $50,000, with most of that covered by the North
Okanagan Regional District, and $10,000 by the college which owns the
land. Greater Vernon Advisory Committee director Jim Garlick says these types of studies are mandatory. "The province requires them on every site that we're building on.
What can be found is any artifacts. It could be shelter, it could be
tools. Some arrow heads were found in the area where the grid road went
in," says Garlick, who is also Coldstream's mayor. GVAC chair Mike Macnabb says they've also decided to set up a construction management committee. "It's been proven successful through the Okanagan Regional Library
process and some of the other big projects that we have (Multiplex and
Performing Arts Centre). It's a way just to keep the public informed
through the political body as to where we are, because we don't want any
surprises." Four political reps from Greater Vernon will sit on the committee
(One each from Coldstream, Vernon, Areas B and C), which will report to
GVAC, and user groups will get input into the facility's design. It's still to be determined who will sit on the panel but Garlick has already said he would like to be his community's rep. The plan for the 7.5 million dollar track and field facility was passed by a 52% margin in a referendum last month.

Don Quixote Note: The up to $50,000 cost (Less the $10,000) will be paid out of the up to $7.53 million funds that will be borrowed to finance the Sports Facility. Original estimate was $19,000 for an Archeological assessment and if artifacts found a second phase could be $14,000.Dec 23 article from Morning Star :
