There's a push to get improved transit service in Greater Vernon. Resident Winnifred Hibbert and eight other campaigners want city
council to consider 7 day a week service from 6 am to 11 pm to better
meet the needs of working class customers. Hibbert realizes that will cost more, but says it will also get more people using the buses. "Let's put it this way: If they ran the buses properly for the working group, they would probably pay for the machines running," says
Hibbert. Hibbert says their petition for improvements has already gathered
over 2,000 names and will be presented to council September 23. "A lot of people right now are walking rather than try to catch the bus. They get there faster by walking." She says not having bus service until 11 pm is not safe for women in the community. They're also calling for council members to use nothing but the bus system to get around, for four months. "That's for going to work, grocery shopping, all of your
appointments. Use the bus solid, no cars for four months to understand
fully what we're talking about," says Hibbert.
