Sudden sinkholes have been disastrous in some communities, but one in Vernon is being described as minor.  The City of Vernon was notified by a resident Tuesday that a sinkhole had developed east of the 30th Avenue roundabout, at the edge of a sidewalk. "They will occasionally occur near a creek crossing," said James Rice, public works manager, adding that there is a creek in the area. The hole was about three feet wide and seven feet deep. Crews were on scene Wednesday filling and packing the hole. "The road is safe for travel and we will keep a close eye on it," said Rice. On Monday, a large sinkhole developed under a resort in Florida.

The city of Vernon has closed 30th Avenue by the  downtown Safeway. It's due to a sinkhole that's opened up at the roundabout just to the west of the store. City spokesmen say it was actually noticed a couple of days ago, and they aren't sure what caused it.
