A local politician says rising costs for two proposed cultural facilities could have an impact on other groups looking for future government funding. Greater Vernon Advisory Committee chair Mike MacNabb says the latest estimates for an art gallery and museum would double the facilities' annual operating costs to nearly a million dollars a year. He says, "Because every year we grant up to approximately a million dollars in funding for arts and culture. If we go ahead with this, that's going to double, and can we legitimately do that? Is that something that taxpayers want?" Macnabb says the committee has to be careful it doesn't over-subscribe to the two cultural groups, at the expense of others. The GVAC committee has postponed a spring referendum on an arts gallery and expanded museum to take a closer look at the costs and alternatives. A new estimate puts the construction and soft costs of the two venues at $35 million, double earlier estimates.
