The push for a governance review in Greater Vernon will be back in the news again next week. The citizens group that gathered 3,160 names in a petition last fall, will present its findings and recommendations to Vernon and Coldstream councils on Monday. The Greater Vernon Governance Society, headed by financial advisor and Coldstream resident Bruce Shepherd, lists eight reasons why local governments should support a fact-finding study on the issue. The top reason listed is: "In total, 3,160 eligible voters supported our petition to request a restructuring review and plan. Many provided comments along the themes of: It's about time It's long overdue, It just makes sense, We want to know the facts," reads the presentation. "We believe that this is significant and credible public input in support of bringing forward an unbiased analysis of the pros and cons of unification. In addition, we have received the endorsement of the Greater Vernon Chamber of Commerce and its 650 members," says the document. The presentation also includes the names of all the people that signed the document that was compiled on line and from door to door canvassing. The society proposes the provincially-funded review could get underway this spring, with completion by the summer of 2015 and and a possible referendum in the fall of 2015. While there's support on Vernon council for a review, Coldstream may be a different story, with mayor Jim Garlick tells Kiss FM earlier, he wouldn't support a study as his community has more important issues to deal with.
