Governance Group To Reconsider Options

The Greater Vernon Governance Society will decide its next move after its annual general meeting in two weeks. President Bruce Shepherd admits it's a setback that their request for a unification study has been turned down by Coldstream council, along with the directors for Areas B and C. "Of course we're disappointed, but at this time I don't think I want to go beyond that. I think we're best now to wait until we have a meeting as a group and go from there," Shepherd tells Kiss FM. Area C (BX-Silver Star) director Mike Macnabb felt the society's motives were biased. "Really the unification folks wanted amalgamation. That's the direction that they would go, even in the terms of reference, and I don't think that's fair, and I'm not going to support it." Macnabb says he and Area B director Bob Fleming indicated their concerns when they met with Shepherd and director Peter Moore before Christmas to discuss the issue. Fleming, director for BX-Swan Lake, disagrees with the society's claim there's no down side to a study. "The down side is, at a bare minimum, it's going to cost the provincial government $100,000, and as soon as you initiate that, you're putting expectations into people's heads about what's going to happen." While MLA Eric Foster isn't available today, it's believed the study needed the backing of at least two local governments to get the province to consider funding it. Vernon council delayed its vote to support the society's request until January 27.
