Vernon council will decide if they will back a study on local government unification in two weeks, but by then it may be a moot point. Peter Moore and other members of the citizens-led Greater Vernon Governance Society that organized a 3,160-name petition made their request for a review, to city reps. "We receive a fairly substancial, and we think a credible and significant number of signatures from participants in all of the communities, including in excess of 2,000 people who are registered voters for the city of Vernon," said Moore. (Vernon councillor Juliette Cunningham) While some members of council wanted to deal with the request yesterday, councillor Juliette Cunningham says that was defeated. "I respect my partners at the regional district. We've worked really hard to change the tone out there, and I just think following our normal procedures for delegations was appropriate in this case," says Cunningham. Councillor Bob Spiers says council will vote on supporting a study in two weeks, and thinks it will pass. The society needs the support of at least two local governments for the study to proceed, and also made a presentation to Coldstream council last night. Coldstream voted unanimously not to ask for a study citing concerns about higher taxes and a lessening of residents say on major issues.
